Project Objective 2: Forming SW S¡X
The second key objective of this project is forming a band. I have prior experience of this, and am well aware that the problem known as "herding cats" applies even with as few as six people. I have provisionally decided upon the name SW S¡X for the band. This is my partial postcode SW6, re-styled for fun, and to reference the six players. Note that I have avoided the term sextet which perhaps suggests a more mainstream chamber-jazz ensemble than the jazz-fusion vibe I have in mind.
Musicians?
I will be looking for people who can really play their instruments, and can play from notated music. This music (though not all the music I write) is probably best described as jazz-fusion. All pieces contain at least one improvised solo, which requires creative innovative playing. This kind of music requires a flexible, jazzy approach to playing what is on the page, but it also relies on being able to play what is written when needed. Lightning-fast sight-reading ability is a Nice-To -Have, but a diligent player who can take away sheet music and come back able to play it at the next rehearsal would be a very close second.
NB: Just to be clear (it surprises me that this isn't always), all band members will be expected to own and maintain their own equipment and to have transport - or at least be able to get about independently. Availability, reliability and mobility are key attributes. Talent is necessary but not sufficient!
The Line-up
The band will consist of two horns, guitar, keyboard, bass and drums.
- My role will include playing bass of course (electric and upright...
- ... and I will want to work with a very steady drummer who can read but also play creatively and with whom I can form a close musical partnership
- I will look also for a sympathetic jazz guitarist with some rock and funk sensibilities (including use of eg. FX pedals): there is room in this band for some soaring lead guitar as well as more conventional jazz soloing and comping, plus funky riffing and strumming.
- The keyboard player will need to play piano, electric piano, synthesiser and organ (or at least be adept in using such settings on their electronic keyboard).
- The horn players will probably be alto and tenor sax - ideally also between them doubling on soprano sax, flute, clarinet and bass clarinet.
This is mainly an instrumental line-up to which guest vocalist/s may be added from time to time. Occasionally other musicians - such as additional percussion - may also be added.
